Female bonding over snowmobiling holiday trip
By Kelly Mason

I got a call from a female friend I met one day over brunch who was a friend of a friend’s cousin. Ok, long story short….we hardly knew each other but as the conversation fleet onto ATV riding and dirt biking, I raised an eyebrow and saw her smile. The connection was made. Sheila was a small woman, so, I was quite surprised that she had an interest in something like ATV riding. But then again, I’m not such a hulk or sportswoman either. Soon the conversation led us to snowmobiling since it was chilly outside right smack in the middle of winter. Frankly speaking, I am not too good with snowmobiling but since she admitted that she was only OK with snowmobiling as well, we decided to do it, anyway. Oh Tila, that’s the name of the new friend.

The moon still hangs brightly in the sky during the early morning that we decided to meet for the first ever women-bonding-snowboarding activity together. Since we hardly knew each other, I dragged a friend, Lucy, and Tila dragged another friend, Camille, along for the snowboarding weekend.  We saw endless white powder beyond the Wyoming landscape and were awed with the sheer beauty of it all. I was thinking to myself that even if we made absolute fools of ourselves snowmobiling around like a bunch of school kids, the scenery is worth it!

By the time I saw a parked vehicle beside the snowmobiling club house, I felt a little bit jittery. I don’t even remember what Tila looked like anymore and I bet she didn’t recognize me either…what with all that extra snowmobiling clothing we’ve packed on. But I did recognize her and she DID recognize me and once we started introducing Lucy and Camille, all the anxiety dissipated! We started yapping along hundred miles an hour ten minutes after the introduction! Well, that’s how women work, you see, and I can see some of you men readers smirking along there. Even as we were trying to pick a snowmobile to rent for the trip, all of us were gigglish-ly sharing clothing size secrets.

You see, this is the thing with women. We connect with each other easily and when all of us know quite-close-to-nothing about snowmobiling makes the bonding process even easier. But we did ask one of those snowmobiling tour guides to help us out around the snowmobiling area. We’re not afraid of toppling over or anything since this bunch of females can hold our own as far as ATVs are concerned but it was more, like, getting lost. We don’t like getting lost in the middle of no where even though the landscape and scenery is simply breathtaking. And what if one of us had trouble with our rented snowmobile?

That was only the second time I’ve ever taken on a snowmobile, I’ll be honest with you, but it wasn’t all that difficult at all. My verdict is that if you’ve always handled big machines like ATVs and all that, I’m sure you can handle a snowmobile quite easily. It takes a little practice that’s all, the guide assured us. And he was right, of course.

I loved the snowmobiling holiday trip and can’t wait to go for another snowmobiling trip but there’s something I have to say that I am utterly disappointed with. My stamina. Maybe it’s because I have been riding ATVs all the time and the sheer thought of handling something different drains the energy from me (Yeah yeah….what an excuse, right?). And the slipping and sliding of the snowmobile didn’t help much either. I can see that Lucy and Camille were having some ‘stamina’ problems as well and surprise surprise…the tiniest one of us all, Tila, appeared totally super fit for snowmobiling. Kudos to Tila.

All in all, by the time we’re done with snowmobiling and managed to haul our tired bodies to our parked vehicles, we’ve ALL exchanged phone numbers, got connected to each other, promise to go shopping together and remembered each others’ kids’ names.

I know some of you might think it petty and trivial but having an outdoor activity like this, irregardless of whether you’re riding an ATV, snowmobile, wearing a pair of skis or driving 4-wheel-drive, bonding becomes naturally easy. Over beer (for us, we had curly fries as bonding agent) or coffee, people get connected to each other because of a sport and the adrenaline rush. Snowmobiling with them group of girls have been a totally exhilarating experience and fully recommend it to you.
