Riding it rough with Yamaha Big Bear 400 IRS Utility ATV

 No woes about getting wet! You’ve got to hand it to the guys at Yamaha ATV for remaking the Big Bear Yamaha ATV so much so that this utility ATV is finally what it should have been when it was first introduced. The changes are not apparent until you get the chance to swing a leg over this Big Bear Yamaha utility ATV. You see, Yamaha ATV has finally decided to zoom in on some areas in the country where there’s mud almost all year round. As long as it rains, you can expect to get stuck in the mud if you’re riding the trails. I mean, I love mud too but it can get a little tricky. If you live in or love to ride in Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, Kentucky and Arkansas, you’re going to appreciate what Yamaha Big Bear ATV 400 IRS has to offer.

You see, Yamaha built the Big Bear 400 IRS ATV for a good reason. Being a utility ATV, people like it simple. Sleek and fancy is for those with penchant for speed. But for folks over at the regions mentioned above, practicality and simplicity ranks a little higher than design. And the folks behind Yamaha ATV know this very well. Hence, the Big Bear Yamaha ATV has a single over-head cam 386cc air and oil-cooled engine and a 33mm carburetor. The reasoning behind this is that ATV fans around this region use their ATVs for almost everything – hence, they want something practical, usable and simple. Having the radiator whacked up badly because it is clogged with mud is pretty common around here, so, to keep this problem at bay, Yamaha ATV have decided to keep the radiator free from mud by mounting the air cooler higher.

 Smooth transition
As you know, when you talk about riding the trails in this region, you’re talking ROUGH. Hence, an ATV with smooth transition like the Big Bear Yamaha Utility ATV works perfectly for such difficult terrain. This Utility ATV from Yamaha comes with semi-automatic transmission, clutchless shift manual, and control is pretty much moto style. Frankly speaking, riding an CVT auto is sort of difficult in such arduous territory. It takes only very little rain to flood over the terrain, making your ATV riding experience here damn near miserable if you’re not experienced enough. The water holes are absolute killers, actually, even for the best of us!

Wheeling it right
Yamaha ATV is right in giving this utility ATV the right kind of mud wheels. Without it which many of us, ATV riders, would have sunk sadly into the deep water holes. With conventional discs in front, there are hydraulics on the back. This keeps the motion going while giving the ATV stability and operates more consistently.
With the new suspension on the modified Yamaha utility ATV, ATV riders have better ground clearance, from 9.7 inches to about 10.2 inches…pretty good since the ride becomes more comfortable. And another change that we liked in Yamaha Big Bear 450 IRS is the fact that the platform helps protect clothing from unnecessary splatters of mud. But in our personal opinion, the larger platform might restrict movements by making finding a footing on ground a little difficult.

A real bull on the trail
If there’s one thing the Yamaha Big Bear ATV is, it’s a bull and not a bear. Getting around in rough terrain is especially easy and comfortable and you can often negotiate logs, stones, rises, ruts….whether uphill or downhill easier. Even when you just ride through the trail terrain in second gear, we don’t think it would be a problem at all! The Yamaha Big Bear 450 IRS is just full of power in that department. The balance on this utility ATV is impressive and it’s not even as heavy as we thought it was going to be at only 593-pound.

Compact, comfortable and well-balanced….this is what Yamaha Big Bear 400 IRS is all about. Although it isn’t perfect because we could use with a little bit firmer setting for the stock suspension, we pretty much think this Yamaha utility ATV rocks big time. It’s going at retail for approximately $5,600 a pop and I personally think it is well worth the money.
