When the kids start yearning for the real dirt bike in favor of the toy bike

Every single child develops differently and their needs and personalities play an important role when we are trying to decide between the real thing or the play thing. Kids, as they grow older will soon realize that the dirt bike that they’re riding is a toy and they might want to take their interest in bike riding to the next level. This is often, as we often see, the time when the parents will stand nose-to-nose with a dilemma. To buy the real thing or a toy thing?

It depends on several things about your kid. Dirt bikes are made differently for kids of different skill levels. Mini dirt bikes for kids are not as dangerous as we are inclined to believe it is. But we understand why parents are hesitant when faced with the predicament. Here are a couple of things to take into consideration when your kid outgrows his or her toy dirt bike and wants an upgrade to the real thing…a dirt bike for kids or mini bikes.

The age factor - Mini bikes are made for kids between 4 and 5
Although age is not the only thing we have to take into consideration when looking for mini dirt bikes for kids, it is still an important factor. So, the first thing you’ll need to address is the age of your child. Usually, we’re just saying this generally, kids are mature enough to handle mini dirt bikes around the age of 4 or 5. The 50cc, 70cc, 100cc, 125cc mini dirt bikes designed and built for young kids are perfect choices but the thing is that we won’t recommend anything bigger than that if your kid’s only begun taking interest in dirt bike riding. The younger the kid, the smaller the engine size…that’s the rule of thumb.

Maturity factor – Can your kid handle rules of mini dirt bike riding?
Kids mature at a different rate, as mentioned earlier, so, you are the best judge as far as ‘maturity’ is concerned. Physical dexterity is one thing but physical ability often comes with practice while it is harder to determine if a kid is mature enough to handle a mini dirt bike. Is your kid able to understand, comprehend, remember and execute safe dirt riding rules? Do they know that while mini dirt bikes are made for kids and are relatively safe but when rules are broken, there are serious consequences to deal with? When you speak to them about all these safety rules, how receptive is your kid?

Put your kid on a mini dirt bike and see his or her reaction? Is your child a little bit of a show-off? Is he or she daring or impulsive? If yes, precautionary steps need to be taken.

A point of note here…girls mature faster than boys, so, when you have a boy yearning for a mini dirt bike, you have every right to be more concerned as opposed to a parent of a young kid girl! Ok, we’re going to stay away from gender stereotyping which is not something we like to do.

Get a professional to guide, train, and be a mentor to your kid
Even though most of us here are more than adept at teaching or training our own kids at dirt bike riding, most of us send our kids to dirt bike riding schools. There are many different reasons for doing that. One of them is that there’s company and they can learn together with others about the basic rules and techniques to mini dirt bike riding. They get to do a little bit of social mingling as well, so, all’s cool there.

Secondly, they learn better through a mentoring program. Not that we, as parents, cannot be good mentors or role models for our aspiring dirt bike riding kids but we fix their lunch boxes and tuck them into beds….and kids don’t have the capability of segmenting out the different roles that we play. Sadly too, that kids find it easier to look up to someone professional in the dirt bike riding arena as opposed to the dad or mom who rides well.

But so what? We lose out on the role model bit but as long as the kids are safe on their mini dirt bike for kids, we say go for it.
