ATV riding is fun and it can be even more fun if you know and follow the rules of the road and make safety your top priority.
First of all, read the manufacturers owner's manual that came with your ATV, any known limitations or specialty uses will be here. Learn everything you can about your individual ATV. ATVs handle differently from cars and motorcycles, and proper handling should be learned prior to taking on ATV trails.
Another basic rule of thumb when riding your ATV is learn to do a pre-ride inspection, simple things like learning your ATVs nuances and if you learn to do simple maintenance on your ATV now, you will save yourself hundreds upon hundreds of dollars in repairs down the road.
If you are a rider under the age of 16, it is a good idea and the law in many states that you must be supervised by an adult. In addition, follow the ATV Model Size and Minimum Age recommendations. Never attempt to operate an ATV that is more powerful than you are able to handle.

As for areas to ride your ATV, make sure you have large,flat open areas to practice your ATV handing skills. Always keep both hands on your handlebars and both feet on your ATVs footrests. To remove your hands or feet could result in becoming unbalanced and tumbling off your ATV.
Spend some time and learn to brake properly, there are many courses taught at your local Department of Transportation where you can learn proper and safe handling of your ATV and other tips to make your ride not only a great one but a safe one as well!
