Red and White Mountain Road, is a very great place to begin, if you are not an experienced ATV rider. This is the kind of road that would make a wonderful place to practice and get to know your ATV.
It is in the NW region of the state and like the name implies, The Red And White Mountain, is a great place to take in the scenery as well.
You can get to this road by traveling west(from Vail) on North Frontage road for 1 mile. There will be a sign on the right side of the road marked "Piney Lake/Red Sandstone Road". Turn right at the sign. At 3/10 of a mile from the turn-off, follow the road to the right as it makes a hairpin turn and continues up the mountain. At 6/10 of a mile from the turn-off, you'll see a sign for Piney River Ranch at the beginning of a dirt road. Follow this main road. At 5 miles from the start of the dirt road, you'll see a large meadow and take a left. Continue down the road until you reach a "Y". Follow the right fork and you are located on the Red and White Road.
This is a graded road, but can be wash-boarded sometimes, so drive your ATV slowly and be on the look out for traffic, such as bikers and hikers. You should always use caution when riding your ATV. There is a little erosion on this trail also, so look out for that. Make sure you are always wearing your helmet as it is just a good common sense and the ground that you're riding your ATV upon can be unstable.
Plan for a full day here and stay on the ATV trail. The beginning of this trail is very narrow, so always stay alert. Always let someone know what trail you are riding, and never ride alone. Safety must always come first. And most of all, have fun.
