The rules and regulations for riding your ATV at the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests are dictated by motor vehicle laws determined by the State of Georgia. Anyone driving an ATV on these trails must follow these rules and must also have a valid driver's license. The only exception to this rule is a few Forest Service roads that have been specifically designated by the Forest Supervisor. To guarantee the safety of the driver, these areas are specially designated and the person driving must be accompanied by an adult who has a license. Unlicensed vehicles are allowed to be used on certain trails and in the designated areas, but these vehicles should never be driven on any public or Forest Service road.
All ATVs must stick to the designated trails, roads and other areas that are marked specifically for ATV use. Some of the trails are restricted to motorbikes only, whereas other trails mainly allow ATV and other off road vehicles. These restrictions exist both for safety reasons and to cater to the specific needs of each type of vehicle. While on the trail, remember not to operate your ATV in a manner that disturbs or damages the land or wildlife. If you violate the land, you may possibly face a fine of $500 or a sentence of up to six months in prison.
Some other things to consider while riding your ATV at the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest: Make sure your ATV has an effective and operating spark arresting device.Your ATV must not create a noise while you are traveling 35 miles per hour or less in excess of 86 decibels at 50 feet or 90 decibels at 50 feet traveling over 35 miles per hour. Ride your ATV on forest roads cautiously and safely, and respect the rights of others and do not shortcut or switch-back while in the forest.
