Being adventurous and having fun are trademarks of ATV riders. But hopefully safety and responsible ATV riding are a trademark too. You know it takes brains and skills to operate an ATV responsively and respectfully. It's not just a matter of turning the ignition key.
Part of the allure for ATV riders is the opportunity to ride off road but unless it's done responsibly ATV riding can be damaging to the environment. Plan and prepare a route that is safe and legal for ATV driving. Local agencies like the Forest Service, National Park Service, or Bureau of Land Management should have information on off road trails near you.
Stay on roads and trails that are designated for ATVs, you may be tempted to try other trails but there is usually a reason that ATVs are not allowed to be there. Never make your own shortcuts or trails. Private land should only be crossed with the owner's permission.
Always make sure to drive in the middle when on the trail. You'll avoid widening the trail with your ATV and destroying vegetation and foliage along the path.
If you come across obstacles such as fallen trees, logs etc. Make sure you drive over them with your ATV one wheel at a time to avoid disrupting any vegetation or the natural lay of the land. You don't want you and your ATV to disturb natures plans.
If you come across a stream or a creek and you cannot avoid crossing it, go very slowly at a ninety degree angle and definitely only where the ATV trail crosses the water.
Go slowly and carefully over any unfamiliar terrain with your ATV.
Riding your ATV is all about off roading but you can still use caution and sense to make sure your ATV ride is fun and safe.
