Short answer is : to protect you and yes. The longer answer that will explain why follows. A chest protector is very necessary riding exquipment because a lot of debris and rocks (roost) gets kicked up by yourself and other riders. That debris and especially rocks, can hit with an amazing amount of force. A chest protector will save you from pain and injury when you get pelted with debris and roost and also during a fall. If you have ever seen a rock the size of a fist lofted into someone's chest, you'll probably say it's worth it right then to get chest protection for yourself when you ride.
There are two types of chest protectors, the plastic protector deflectors that fit on top of your riding gear and cover your until upper body. The type is protective body armor that fits under your clothing when you ride and usually fits snugly to your body as you ride. Either one is great for keeping your body from taking an impact from a flying rock or other debris. Protective body armor is usually a little more expensive but it's a lot less bulky and most of them come with built in kidney belts.
If you are worried about getting your body armor or protector to fit right, don't worry - it's easy! Generally speaking, just buy the same size that you wear when you purchase a t-shirt. If you will be wearing your protector over a jacket, you may want to go one size larger to insure ease of movement.
