Colorado has a lot of great spots to ATV scattered around the great State. If you love to climb and maneuver on your ATV, you will love almost every riding location in Colorado.
The State of Colorado has a good number of National Forest lands where it is permissible to ride your ATV. Those National Forest Lands are as follows : Arapaho National Forest,Comanche National Grassland,Grand Mesa National Forest,Gunnison National Forest,Pawnee National Grassland,Pike National Forest,Rio Grande National Forest,Roosevelt National Forest,Routt National Forest,San Isabel National Forest,San Juan National Forest,Uncompahgre National Forest and White River National Forest. All allow ATV riding within limited and marked areas. You also must adhere to the following guidelines in order to ride your ATVs in these federally managed lands.
Your ATV may only be ridden in designated areas and you must get a permit from the Ranger's station. There is no minimum posted age in Colorado for riding an ATV, but all minors must be in the company of a licensed adult who is also riding an ATV, and no passengers. All ATVers must wear a DOT approved helmet and eye goggles when riding their vehicles.
Your ATV must have lights if riding in the early morning or later afternoon hours, and your brakes will be examined to make sure they meet the minimum safety requirements. A noise canceling muffler must be installed on your ATV prior to riding on any federally managed lands, also a spark arrestor must be in place prior to riding as the risk of forest fires in these areas is quite high at certain times of the year.
The Forest Service asks that your "Tread Lightly" and follow the objectives put forth by the Treadlightly organization to insure that future generations will have pristine ATV trails to ride on.
