Being a coastal state, South Carolina has a little something for everyone's ATV riding taste. If you like sand, you'll find it here on the coast; if you enjoy riding your ATV through some most lush and most densely foliaged forest areas you'll find to ride on your ATV.
In order to ride your ATV legally in the State of South Carolina you do not have to register your ATV and there is no minimum age for riding an ATV. If you are going to be riding on any federally managed lands, such at State or National Forests, you must get a riding permit that is prominently displayed and your brakes and headlights must be in good working condition. Also, you must wear a helmet and eye protection in the form of safety goggles whenever you are riding your ATV. A licensed adult must accompany any ATVers under the age of 16-years of age, also on an ATV in the National Forest areas such as The Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests, which feature 4 off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails covering more than 86 miles of riding opportunities.
The ATV trails are closed frequently and new riding trails are opened, so call ahead to make sure the area you want to ride is open and available.
If you're looking for a group of ATV enthusiasts to ride with, there are some groups you can join up with like the Cherokee Mudslingers and you can visit their website at https://www.cherokeemudslingers.com/ .
