If you got a new ATV, you're probably dying to take it out on the trail. If you haven't already, take a rider safety course. Many local Department of Motor Vehicle offices give these lessons for free or a small nominal charge. You will learn the basics of safe ATV handling and the value of taking a short safety course can't be overstated.
Riding safely means making sure you are alert at all times. Never ride under the influence of alcohol or any other drugs. This pertains to any prescription or over the counter cold medicines that can make you drowsy. You are a danger to yourself and other ATV riders if you don't have all your wits about yourself. Resist the urge to show off. Unfortunately, when people don't practice safe riding habits, accidents can happen. Especially if you are a newer ATV rider, stick to the safe handling of your ATV. You may feel you want to explore harsher terrain and you probably cannot wait to climb rocks and steep hills, but learn to navigate the winding flat trails and then have an experienced ATVer show you the ropes for maneuvering your ATV.
Take your time learning to use your ATV, if you rush into a situation you can't handle, you could find yourself in over your head. Take the time to know and understand your ATV, and ride with experienced riders. In no time at all you will have gotten the experience and knowledge needed to handle the more intense trails.
