Many parents will be purchasing electric ATVs for their children for Easter and other special occasions this spring. These ATVs make fantastic gifts for kids but they come with some responsibilities for safety that must be learned prior to riding.
The Peg Perego line has a fun selection that was designed with the safety of your child in mind. Most of these electric ATVs have 3 gears : 1st, 2nd, and reverse. Children up to age 8 are the recommended riders for the majority of these ATV products.
Is My Child Ready?
That is a question only you can answer. Look at your child objectively and decide if your child is ready for the responsibility of riding an ATV. Some children have fantastic eye/hand coordination at the age of 3 and others just don't develop those skills until they are a little older. Although these electric ATVs don't go fast, you want to be sure your child can properly maneuver his or her ATV.
It's a sad statistic that the majority of the accidents that occur with kids and ATVs occurred because the child was riding unsupervised or was placed on an ATV they weren't ready to handle. Never allow your children to ride their ATVs unsupervised and make sure they are riding in a safe riding area. If they are just rolling around the yard, remove any thing that could make the ATV off balance, this could include a humble garden hose. Make sure your child always wears safety gear. When operating any ATV, electric or otherwise, always make sure your child is wearing a helmet, the younger the child, the larger and heavier their head and there is even more of a need for a helmet. Talk to your child and let them know exactly why they need to wear a helmet, many children will appreciate a reason why a helmet is needed rather than simply being told to wear one.
Electric ATVs can be a lot of fun for your child as long as you choose a model made for your child's age and handling capabilities. Make sure they are well versed in the safe operating of their ATV and let 'em roll!
