There has been a lot of debate on how much damage 4-wheelers do to the environment. The riders of 4-wheelers who disrespect trail rules and land postings have caused damage to fish spawning areas, wetlands, destroyed vegetation and increased erosion among other negative impacts to the environment are not part of the majority. Most riders of 4-wheelers are conscientious and have adopted the protocols put forth by Treadlightly. Here are a few tips for being a more environmentally friendly 4-wheeler rider.
First, ride only on marked and approved trails. The trails are specifically designed for this and will not have as many negative affects on the environment. Always get permission from landowners before riding your 4-wheeler on their land. This could eliminate many problems from trespassing charges to accidents. If you are riding on someone else's land you have no idea if they might be hunting or engaging in another activity that might be harmful to you. Always get permission first.
If you bring anything on the trail with you, bring it out. This includes anything you use for camping and other sidelines that generally go with riding 4-wheelers. Your goal should be to leave the land a little better than when you found it.
Avoid damaging streams or wetlands. If an area looks sensitive or protected, avoid it. If the problem is you have nowhere to ride and enjoy riding, join a 4-wheeler club. Many 4-wheeler clubs build and maintain trails for their members. This will give you an opportunity to enjoy your 4-wheeling adventures without negatively impacting the environment.
