Taylor Pass is an interesting ride in Colorado. Besides the fun ATV trails and scenic beauty that most Colorado ATV rides give you, there is also a ghost town located on the ATV trail.
This is an easy ATV trail to access. Take Pearl Pass Trail to the end and then take the paved road to Express Creek Road on the right. On the right you will see Ashcroft Ghost Town. The trailhead is located just past this area.
The ATV trail passes right by Ashcroft Ghost Town. In the mid-1800's this was a mining boom town which people eventually left as the silver in the mines dried up and then was fairly desolate until the 1940's when two partners attempted to turn the area into a ski resort. It wasn't meant to be as one partner was killed in WWII and the other leased the land to the U.S. Army where it became home to the 10th Mountain Division and that was eventually disbanded. If you have enough time in your day of ATVing, pull over and take a short tour of the ghost town. Many of the buildings are still in tact. It's a definite photo opportunity.
The trail itself starts out easy but then turns into a more difficult road. There are some steep climbs and turns, but nothing too difficult for most ATV riders. If you have mastered the ATV trails rated easy, you won't have any problems riding this fun and interesting area.
