Gramp's is a friendly sounding name for a short 2-mile 4-wheeler trail that gets only moderate use and the difficulty level is only intermediate. This is a great trail for 4-wheeler riders of all skill levels.
This 4-wheeler trail is managed by the Pike National Forest Service and is open for a very short 4-wheeler riding season from winter through spring. This is a multi-use trail so you are likely to encounter other 4-wheeler riders, hikers, motorcyclists, mountain bikers and snowmobile enthusiasts.
Gramp's has some steep grades but mostly it's a lush winding trail full of turns and narrow areas. Be aware of the 4-wheeler trails can get quite cold, so dress appropriately. Even when it's warmer down at the trailhead, it can become colder as your ride along the trails. Also, the Forest Service advises that besides doing a pre-ride inspection of your 4-wheeler, you should also take some basic car repair tools with you. A shovel can be used to dig your 4-wheeler out of a lot of backcountry problems. Another great tip from the Forest Service that should be followed is to be sure you bring along extra safety items such as water, flashlights, maps, and a cell phone when you ride your 4-wheeler in this area.
Gramps is a great 4-wheeler trail for beginning ATV riders to learn to navigate narrow trails and how to maneuver around some of the moderately steep grades. And experienced 4-wheeler riders will enjoy the scenic trails with their dense foliage. Contact the Pike National Forest Ranger's Office before you ride this trail as it is closed when there is an accumulation of snow or ice on the ground.
