If you're lucky enough to be traveling in the Northwest Region of Colorado during the months of May through November, there is a treat in store for you and your 4-wheeler.
The North Elk Trail is a multi-use trail that only sees light use from other 4-wheeler riders, hikers, horseback riders, motorcyclists, and during the early and late seasons, snowmobilers.
Although this trail is only 4 miles long, it is a great little ride for 4-wheeler riders of any experience level. Beginning 4-wheeler riders will be able to gain a lot of confidence in their handling skills of their 4-wheeler as there are very few challenges on these 4-wheeler trails.
This 4-wheeler trail is not clearly marked, so obtaining a map from The White River National Forest Ranger station would be a good idea. The 4-wheeler trail goes east through aspen and oak brush foliage. There are numerous hills and you will find this is a very scenic area as you ride your 4-wheeler through. The last mile of the trail follows an old road and it will be easy to keep your 4-wheeler on the trail. The North Elk Trail ends at some private property and there is no loop around.
The difficulty level of these trails is good for teaching beginning 4-wheeler riders how to follow lightly marked trails and read trail maps. It is easy to get turned around on unmarked and partially marked 4-wheeler trails, so this one with its easy ride is a great 4-wheeler trail to hone those navigational skills on!
