2006 has brought great changes in the Ocala National Forest. Nearly 8,300 acres located in the southwest portion of the forest have been closed to 4-wheeler riders as the trails are being allowed to reclaim themselves. This process is very necessary to keep the forest in constant state of renewal. To keep the 4-wheeler riders happy, the National Forest has created additional trails to ride on - be certain to get the most currently available map to plot your ride so you don't attempt to ride your 4-wheeler over the now closed areas.
Ocala has some excellent 4-wheeler riding. The scenery is beautiful and there is literally something for everyone here. Newer riders will find the trails rated "easy" are just right and seasoned 4-wheeler riders will love the challenges on the more difficult trail systems.
Even with the closure, this is a huge place to ride your 4-wheeler; if you're able, make it a long weekend of riding your 4-wheeling with your family or favorite group of riding buddies. The trails are open from dawn til dusk and if you are riding in the early morning or early evening hours, you are sure to see some of the local wildlife residents such as deer and a large number of bird species.
4-wheelers and motorcycles are allowed on these trails so be aware that other riders will be on them with you. They are one-way trails and there is little to no room in many areas for passing. The trails themselves are lushly foliaged and some areas are so dense the trees will block out the sunlight from above.
There is only a $6 fee for parking and those fees go towards the continued maintenance of the 4-wheeler trail systems. If you choose to make a long weekend out of riding this area, camping is available but there is no shower or water located at the campsites so be sure to bring in your own. Make it a great long weekend of 4-wheeling fun at Ocala National Forest.
