If you are looking for a rugged 4-wheeler experience, look no farther
than a trip on the Apache Trail. This is a 40 mile jaunt with some
seriously rugged challenges. This route is Arizona 88, and connects Apache
Junction to Globe, Arizona. Your 4-wheeler will pass Saguaro Lake,
Canyon Lake, Apache Lake, and Theodore Roosevelt Lake. Your 4-wheeler stop
choices are Apache Junction, Goldfield, Tortilla Flat, Tonto, NM, and
Globe. If these seem to tame, you will be riding your 4-wheeler in some
of the most rugged, beautiful terrain in the Superstition Mountains.
The terrain is rough for most of the ride, this is a great trail if you
have some good experience riding your 4-wheeler over situations that
require a little climbing and dealing with loose gravel trails. This is
not a ride for anyone new to the sport.
There is a lot of real 4-wheeler action here; most of the road is
unpaved and meanders from town to town. This makes for a great weekend
getaway, there are plenty of points of interest where you can pull your
4-wheelers over and look around. The view of the Superstition Mountains is
one of the best in the southwest. Goldfield has a reputation as a ghost
town. Lost Dutchman State Park is here and is the starting point for
the Dutchman Trail.
Along the way, you can take an 4-wheeler break at Canyon Lake. It has a
wonderful lake beach in the middle of the desert. The area is very
rugged and open with little vegetation. Outside Tortilla Flat is the
crossing of Tortilla Creek. Past that the road turns itself into nothing more
than a gravel track, a wonderful 28 mile trek for fun 4-wheeler ride.
Drive your 4-wheeler above the edge of Apache Lake, there is a view of
Theodore Roosevelt Dam. At the end of the 4-wheeler trip you will see
the town of Globe, a copper and silver mining town that appears on the
horizon.
