Martinez Canyon is a 4-wheeler driver's dream come true. Located in Pinal County, Arizona, Martinez Canyon is one of 17 or more ghost towns within the county. However, the immediate area is so rugged it takes someone with a good deal of 4-wheeler handling skill and dare to negotiate the countryside. The terrain is rocky with loose boulders and wash deposits and it only grows more challenging as one travels deeper into the desert.
Martinez Canyon is south of US 60 and more than 20 miles from the main highway. The trip from the highway to Martinez becomes rougher by the yard. It would be a wise choice to make the run with several other experienced 4-wheeler riders and carrying some type of GPS unit is advisable. This is a veritable moonscape of an 4-wheeler run.
When you're done riding your 4-wheelers for the day, there are a myriad of fun things to do in this area. You may find yourself fishing the Picacho Peak Reservoir or hiking part of the Superstition Mountains. Enjoy a sunset steamboat cruise. Unless every member of your family is a very experienced 4-wheeler rider, this is not a real family friendly expedition but will be a great ride for anyone with a good deal of experience navigating rough and rocky terrain.
When the terrain is this rugged, pack along a winch kit, just one person having one on the front of their 4-wheeler can truly save the day of riding when someone gets stuck -simply attach the hook to the 4-wheeler and gently pull up and you can continue exploring Martinez Canyon!
