Looking for a short afternoon of fun? There is a short trail you can ride in one afternoon. At just under 3-miles, this 4-wheeler trail will take you through some winding, densely wooded areas that makes for a fun ride. The 4-wheeler trail is rated as easy so it is a fantastic spot for beginning 4-wheelers to get their feet wet for maneuvering their 4-wheelers. The 4-wheeler trails are open from June thru September and be aware you will be sharing these trails with horseback riders, motorcyclists and mountain bikers.
Chalk Mountain Road will take 4-wheeler riders through old growth spruce/fir forest and alpine meadows. An interesting side note about Chalk Mountain is that during the 1970s, Chalk Mountain served as site of an observatory constructed by Louisiana State University.
The road itself provides good views of Mount of the Holy Cross, Chicago Ridge and a mining operation. Before you ride, the Forest Service asks that you do always do a pre-ride inspection of your 4-wheeler to make sure it is in good working order. Too many times, people get stuck out on the trails simply because they didn't do a little preventive maintenance on their 4-wheelers. It only takes a minute to assure your 4-wheeler is mechanically sound and you won't have to worry about anything interrupting your fun riding the 4-wheeler trails.
The National Forest requires that you wear your 4-wheeler helmet at all times and you must stop and register your 4-wheeler at the Forest Ranger's station where you will be given a sticker that must be prominently displayed at all times when you ride.
Chalk Mountain is a fun outing for a day of riding with your 4-wheeler, if you're looking for a new place to ride in California, make Chalk Mountain your next riding destination.
