Hit the Gulch With Your 4-Wheeler

If you're looking for a challenge why not try out Russell Gulch Motorized Trail with your 4-wheeler?

This 4-wheeler trail runs along 6.5 miles of beautiful Pike National Forest. The forest service rates this trail as intermediate to expert, so 4-wheeler neofites shouldn't attempt it on their own.

Russell Gulch 4-wheeler Trail #693 takes you north from Sprucewood. You and your 4-wheeler will pass over gorgeous Bear Mountain and through Russell Gulch to County Road 97 and the Platte River. 4-wheeler riders can enjoy this area year round. Snowmobiling is offered in the winter when you absolutely have to give up your trusty 4-wheeler for a while. Hiking, and horseback riding are also offered spring through fall, but they may seem a little tame for the 4-wheeler enthusiast. The best way to enjoy Russell Gulch is from the seat of your 4-wheeler!

To get there from Deckers: Drive north on Highway 67 to Oxyoke where the highway makes a sharp right. Follow Highway 67 to the right. Continue on this road for at least 8.5 more miles to Sprucewood. Trail 693 meets Highway 67 and Forest Road 515 at the Sprucewood intersection. Trail 693 leads northwest from this intersection.

Since this district is under the management of Pike National Forest make sure you know the rules. You'll need to have a 4-wheeler permit, and be sure that it is prominently displayed. Check your muffler and spark arrestor to make sure they are in good working order before you head out on the trail. Taking safety precautions just makes good sense. Wear your helmet, gloves and goggles at all times when you are riding your 4-wheeler. And it should go without saying that you should never head into the wilderness on a 4-wheeler trail by yourself. Always bring a fellow 4-wheeler enthusiast with you, as well as a walkie talkie or cell phone in case you need help fast.
