North Carolina has a lot of great destinations to ride your 4-wheeler. Best of all, 4-wheelering is a sport the entire family can enjoy. You can take the kids along for the ride, or if you and your favorite someone want to spend a weekend touring the lush forests and enjoying a little time for two, 4-wheelering is a great way to do it.
If you want to be to the letter of the law (and you do) for riding your 4-wheeler in North Carolina, there are a few rules and regulations you need to be aware of. You do not need to register your 4-wheeler with the State and there is no current minimum age for riding a 4-wheeler. However, all riders must wear a DOT approved helmet and eye protection at all times.
North Carolina has four National Forests that allow 4-wheeler riding. They are the Croatan, Nantahala, Pisgah, and Uwharrie National Forests. There are miles and miles of trails to ride your 4-wheeler upon. Stay on the designated trails and always get a current map from the Forest Ranger's Office to make sure you're planning your ride around the most current information. Periodically 4-wheeler trails are closed to allow areas of vegetation to reclaim themselves and allow new growth, and new trails are opened for 4-wheeler riding during these times. This keeps the trail systems renewed at all times and also you aren't riding the same old trail.
North Carolina also has some great 4-wheeler groups if you don't have a group to ride your 4-wheeler with, join up and make some new friends and make a weekend out of it.
