4-wheeler training is a requirement if the 4-wheeler rider is between the ages of 7 and 17 years of age or any 4-wheeler rider who does not possess a driver's license. The 4-wheeler Operator's Permit is required for those situations and it's just good sense to take a safety and training course even if you think you know more than any human should about 4-wheeler riding. In order to take a safety class in Oregon, they require the following from you: a DOT approved helmet, goggles, boots, gloves, your own 4-wheeler and a willingness to learn about safe and responsible operation of 4-wheelers. If you do not have an 4-wheeler of your own, arrangements may be made to enable you to borrow one for training use.
In the course, you will learn Oregon laws regarding 4-wheeler riding, safety inspections prior to riding, how to ride defensively and courteously. How to better control your 4-wheeler in several different weather situations, and safe riding techniques such as starting and stopping, turning (gradual and quick), hills (stopping, u-turns, traversing), emergency stopping and swerving and riding over obstacles. Upon the course's completion, you will be issued an 4-wheeler course completion card that shall be considered a temporary operator permit until the permanent 4-wheeler operator permit is issued by the Department.
The guidelines for a 4-wheeler size to age of rider are as follows in Oregon:
Age 6 and older Under 70cc
Age 12 and older 70cc-90cc
Age 16 and older Over 90cc
Furthermore, all riders younger than 16 should be supervised by an adult well versed in 4-wheeler safety and handling. All riders should wear safety gear and wearing a helmet that is DOT certified and age appropriate when operating your 4-wheeler according to Oregon law.
