In a vast state like California, it’s not hard to find some place nice to ride your ATV but there are very few ATV parks as expansive and pleasant as the one at Prairie City State Vehicular Recreation Area. This California ATV park is located in Rancho Cordova California and is slightly 20 miles or so off of Sacramento and merely 3 miles south of U.S. 50.

This is a good chance for you take to this ATV trail whether you’re on a dirt bike, ATV or four-wheel-drive – there’s always something for everything. In fact, some parts of the trail is easy enough for young kids and beginner riders. So, if you go with your whole family, the kids and beginners can tackle the easier part of the trail while you and your friends hit the other parts including the famous Hangtown Motocross Track.

Although mostly consisting of wide open terrain and grassland, there many challenging trails to ride…for example, the cobbled mine tailings and multiple obstacle terrains for ATVs. That’ll give you a run for your money. Prairie City State Vehicular Recreation Area was bought, earlier on, not for ATVing purposes. You’ll be surprised to note that it was bought in the 1960s for rocket testing purposes! But luckily for ATV enthusiasts in California, it has been turned into a recreational park. The park used to be 400-care odd of land in the middle of nowhere that Sacramento County bought – then later they added another 400-acre piece of land and converted the whole place into a motorcycle riding area. Now, the Off-Highway Division of California manages it and opens it up for ATV riders.

The best thing about riding our ATVs in this California park is the fact that parking space is in abundance, so, we don’t have to worry too much about where to put our vehicles. Furthermore, the kids will love the picnicking in the middle of nowhere and in ATV riding sessions. Frankly speaking, Prairie City State Vehicular Recreation Area is best for family outings as it provides a good place for the kids and beginners to test and hone their skills. Some parts of the trail is a little bit more challenging but the opportunities are limited. Nevertheless, it provides you with a good opportunity to bond with family and friends.

A word of caution is that most parts of this trail is two-way, which means that there will be ATVs and bikes coming in the opposite direction. And there are quite a fair number of blind corners, so, ride ahead of the kids and beginners who are not yet skilled in maneuvering their ATVs. There might be surprise when you turn a corner. There is a mile-long practice track for those who want to test their jumping and turning skills PLUS there’s another mini track for young kids too.

To ride Prairie City State Vehicular Recreation Area, all you need is an official certificate stating that you have passed formal basic safety ATV riding training course and you must be at least 18-years of age. Helmet is a must and they strongly encourage everyone to wear basic proper ATV riding protective gear. You’ll also need to register your ATV and be given a green sticker with the ID plate displayed at all times. Of course, the spark arrestor is a definite must.
